Bangkok Week 711

February 10, 2022

It was a relatively low-key week, highlighted by a trip to the park on Sunday… and more importantly, Arlo’s first pair of scissors!

Arlo had a wet-and-wild Friday at school.

He and his classmates helped clean the toys at the end of the week.

And it culminated in Arlo taking a bath himself!

For lunch? A giant bowl full of noodles!

Arlo managed pretty well on his own.

Slurping up the noodles, one at a time.

Even trying to use chopsticks.

Enjoying his Chirp magazine.

It's Saturday swimming!

Arlo kicks well when he's using the Motor Boat.

Bangkok Week 710

A quieter week, during which Arlo stayed home from school for a few days with a cold. But he did get to celebrate Chinese New Year and Dad’s birthday!

Dad's presents this year: a dinner at Charcoal, and a standing desk!

And dinner at -- guess where? We haven't been here since the B.A. era.

It was a special set menu, in celebration of India's Republic Day. (And other important birthdays.)

It's Saturday morning: you know what that means. Here is Arlo!

Arlo's supposed to be kicking in his noodle...

... but he's spending more of his energy providing commentary on anything and everything else.

But Arlo's the first to jump off.

And his balance was remarkably good, too!

As a reward for a successful swimming class, Arlo gets to eat his lunch in the car.

And a mid-afternoon birthday cake snack.

Arlo can feed himself, and chew-and-swallow, when he wants to!

Sunday morning, Arlo helps Mum with some baking. First: smash up these walnuts.

Then stir together all the dry ingredients.

And get a good look at these eggs. These don't look like the eggs Arlo usually eats!

Having a laugh over the cat on the side of the tissue packet.

And after dinner, getting to try some of the brownies he helped make earlier. These go well with milk!

Arlo's exceptionally resilient lime has made a slow-but-steady comeback since all its leaves were eaten by a caterpillar a few months ago.

The Japanese melons are looking bountiful, too. Time to repot, soon.

And oh my -- a once-in-a-lifetime sighting: a cement mixer, driving past Arlo's house!

Who knew the sois are wide enough to navigate!?

Tuesday is Chinese New Year's celebration at school.

The class even had their very own Dragon.

The Dragon resting on the lawn outside the next day, after a busy day yesterday.

Arlo got a card from Auntie Erika and Uncle Chad. And ooh! Look at the stickers!

So many nice stickers.

Arlo's also shown an interest in fruit this week. Here, wolfing down a bowl of pineapple.

Bangkok Week 709

January 27, 2022

A lower-key week this time: Arlo’s settling into the rhythm of school, still enjoying swimming, and mastering the playground.

Everyone's gotten comfortable with the school drop-off / pick-up routine now.

And Bella's gotten especially comfortable in her bed, enjoying the peace and quiet while Arlo's out.

Friday night is a great time to lay down rail road tracks.

Arlo's figured out how to assemble the bridge!

Now we're in Ekkamai 14, which is the soi that runs behind our house.

This is Astra Academy, the new Primary & Secondary school right behind our house.

They have a fairly green, but also futuristic campus.

Interesting architecture! It's their first year open, but they don't have the oldest grades yet.

Stopping at a nearby commercial plaza on the way home.

Watching as the construction elevators (more properly called 'boiler hoists' apparently) travel up the tall condos under construction.

And there's a new Korean convenience store just around the corner, too.

Arlo couldn't figure out what to get...

... so we tried some DIY tteokbokki.

Ending the day the same way we started it: with a story, at the couch.

While getting dressed on Sunday morning, Arlo found the bag of hand-me-down clothes from Sally. What a cutie.

And off to the park, before it's too hot!

Arlo's a pro at this playground now.

Having a rest, at a very convenient spot.

Arlo likes the tall slide, but it's hard to get to the top without running into other kids!

Every day but Friday, Arlo came running out to greet us.

Bangkok Week 708

January 20, 2022

It’s another busy week! Arlo went to school all 5 days; met some goats and sheep at the farm nearby; and visited a great, new playground nearby with his friends P’Rohan and Quinn. Oh, and he’s now another month older! How exhausting!

It's Friday of Arlo's first week at school, and he now has his own shoe clip!

Today is also January 14th! Arlo turns 2 years and 4 months old today! Time to measure in!

Happy to see Bella after a long day (week!) at school.

Saturday morning means a different kind of school: swimming school!

Arlo is waiting as patiently as he can for his class to start.

It's a big class today: 5 students. Here's Arlo!

Oh wait, maybe *this* was actually the highlight of the farm visit this time: the ice cream!

Arlo wolfed down -- entirely on his own -- a whole cup of mint chocolate chip ice cream.

We'd never seen Arlo eat anything so quickly!

Trying something new for dinner: a much-recommended baguette delivery shop.

Not bad: affordable, with crispy bread and fresh ingredients. And a free greek salad, to boot.

On Sunday morning, peeling himself some breakfast before heading out to meet friends.

We're at Safari Garden, a new (huge) privately-run outdoor playground and restaurant.

Arlo took it slowly at first, sizing up the place, and deciding that the sandbox might be the best place to start...

... but only if he could keep his shoes on!

With a little help, he managed to do a lot of the playground / treehouse, too.

It's quite sizable and spacious... and they're building more.

Finally, the train is free! Sitting like a well-mannered passenger.

Arlo even gets to try his hand at driving the train, and tooting the horn!

You can't tell because of the glare, but that's Arlo at the wheel of this Land Rover!

Here he is, demonstrating how well he handles off-road terrain.

Arlo and Mum are off to explore another part of the jungle gym.

(This affords a great view of their pools, which unfortunately are only open on weekdays.)

Arlo did it all by himself! And it was a dead-end, so we had to turn around and do it all over again!

And an old-fashioned see-saw with Mum. (No springs, no bearings. It's all in your legs!)

Lunch was with P'Rohan, Quinn, and parents, at the Londoner Brew Pub nearby. It was very kid-friendly!

We were pleasantly surprised to see their extensive vegetarian & vegan menu...

... including these "fish" and chips!

But back to reality: it's time to go back to school! Arlo's peeling his breakfast.

Bangkok Week 707

January 13, 2022

It’s a milestone week for our little Baby Arlo: he starts school! Cross fingers that it’ll stay open all term. He did really well all week! And as a bonus, swimming resumed, too!

We forgot to include these photos in last week's album! Arlo's trying his hand at painting with something other than brushes.

Stamps are fun, too! Not bad, for home-made.

Munching on deep-fried tofu chips, and enjoying an evening story. Guiltily.

Good Friday morning! It's the last day of the Holidays, and everyone's in their stripey best.

Arlo's trying all the different ways he can lie like Bella.

Arlo's new favorite books are the Curious George books that Granny brought over.

Splashing in his pool, for the first time in a while.

And Mum baked up a storm, to stock up on sweets before going back to work. (Very chewy) brownies, and (not so crumbly) apple crumble.

Enjoying the apple crumble? Or just being a polite guest?

It's Arlo's first swimming class in 3 weeks! He's excited to be back!

One of Arlo's favorite activities is still chasing the sinker underwater.

The teacher took it easy this class; but Arlo seems to have gotten more comfortable floating on his back during the time-off.

Meanwhile, the new Japanese restaurant around the corner is almost ready to open!

Arlo still enjoys his walks around the neighborhood with Mum & Dad.

Who needs Mum & Dad? Arlo can take himself for a walk!

Mum and Dad stuck around for ~15 minutes, before handing Arlo over to the staff.

Arlo's a bit tall for this coloring house. (But it is neat.)

And the teacher shared a few photos of Arlo's first day, after we left.

He only stayed until 11am, but it was a success!

And before we know it, it's time to go home!

Meanwhile, Bella got a new bed. But Arlo's having none of that.

Back at school for his first "full day" (i.e. until 12:15pm).

He's seems to be getting used to it.

And didn't mind when Mum said good-bye.

This time, we only stayed for a few short minutes before saying good-bye. He's been pretty good this week!

Bangkok Week 706

January 6, 2022

Happy New Year! It’s another busy week: the last full week of the holidays before everyone goes (back) to work / school. We spend lots of time playing outside at parks and playgrounds (who knows how much longer they’ll be open!?) and seeing some friends… while we can!

Happy New Year's Eve! Arlo began the day by requesting that his tent be set up!

Spending time outdoors at the park while we can. Today, Arlo's practicing his balancing skills.

Lots of practice still needed on the biking front; but we're mastering the hamming-it-up.

After quite some effort, we've arrived at our destination: the playground! Arlo springs into action!

Down the slide he goes.

His assessment? "This is a slow slide."

He finally works up the courage to try the big slide!

Good job, Arlo! Here's a slap in the head from Dad.

When we said, "Happy New Year!", Arlo asked if Santa had come and left lots of presents under the tree...

We visited Hua Lamphong station (officially, "Bangkok railway station"), which is having a special commemorative exhibit right now -- including of some old steam trains.

Arlo was not interested in posing with the train! Let's just look at them up close!

We found them, in this nice dining car!

The boys were excited to see the neighboring train pull out of the station.

SRT Prestige! Actually, these trains are still operational for special, occasional trips.

We made it! All the way back to Bangkok!

The station opened in 1916 (just over 105 years ago)... but its future is uncertain now!

They've converted these old wheels and axle into a nice bench in front of the station.

We collected 10 stamps throughout the station, and in return earned a commemorative stamp set and a keychain.

The station is still very much operational. Here, a motorcycle was just loaded into this cargo car.

It would be a shame to see this station razed and replaced with another mall or something.

There's quite a bit of momentum behind the movement to preserve it as a building of historic significance. So let's see!

Back at home, Arlo is inventorying all his cars and trucks (including the new garbage truck and mail delivery truck).

Good morning, Sunday! Arlo decided that Mum & Dad's bed is the better one to wake up in.

New year, new opportunity to organize our affairs. We're off to IKEA for a quick shopping trip!

Running to the main building. Who can get there first?

Arlo's wasting no time! In fact, he looks like a shopping spree natural.

Rushing over to the play kitchen to see what he can find.

This office chair fits nicely.

We're on a very targeted mission. Time to head downstairs to find what we came for!

For a short while, Arlo opts to sit in the shopping cart: it's novel.

But he soon realized it's more fun to push!

Now we're in the warehouse section: Dad's pulled out the big guns.

Arlo pushes, while Dad fetches the big boxes.

This works too: riding on the trolley.

And stopping at Mega Park behind the mall, before heading home. Arlo was very cautious around the fountains this time.

And whoosh, is it a fast one too! Good thing Dad's down there to catch Arlo!

Arlo only agreed to step into the fountain if Mum picked him up. And even so, we didn't last long.

Finally, the playground for little kids is open. Although to Arlo, it's not much fun.

Et le voilà: one of two finished products. To solve our storage problem.

For dinner, another special treat: spaghetti and meatballs, featuring IKEA's plant-based balls.

I must say, the meatballs significantly exceeded my expectations. They tasted really great, and were very fairly priced for the quantity you get.

Monday morning: and another trip to the park / playground.

Eventually we'll reach the playground! But we have to stop every 5 pushes, to make an observation.

"Do I look like Grandpa?"

... so that he can ride the big slide in peace.

Eagle-eyed Arlo spotted a small cement mixer and dump truck. He would keep an eye on these the whole time!

He also found a pair of wooden scissors. So now, it's time to "cut" everything he can find. Like this clothes rack.

They had a nice sand box outside, complete with boots for those less inclined to stand in sand...

... but even so, Arlo was neutral about the experience. (They did have some neat sand toys.)

And finally: is it time to face the ball pit?

It look us about 10 minutes to go down the slide the first time.

He finally did it, but only after Mum "moved the balls" out of the way at the bottom.

Merry Christmas, everyone! Arlo had a protracted Christmas celebration, with gifts to open over many days, and visits with friends and family over many days. It was another busy week!

Starting (resuming?) the week -- and Christmas Eve -- with a selfie with Aa Top.

Here's the result - how sweet!

And helping Yaa clean the floors. (It's mostly Bella hair!)

Speaking of Bella: Tong thinks she has some cleaning to do.

Tong is going to have quite the furball tonight! But Bella doesn't mind.

Arlo also got a great new book about Construction Sites from Granny... featuring Tom, Jason, and friends.

We found the ice resurfacing machine that does the hockey rink, parked in an accessible corner.

Arlo was psyched. But no, he wasn't allowed to sit on it.

Unclear whether it was actually doing anything to resurface the ice.

We were the only ones paying attention.

Heading home, we found ourselves now parked amidst a colorful trio!

And one last Christmas hurrah: the party organized by the local housekeepers. Arlo went out to give out his holiday cards.

He also helped them open the cards he was giving out.

Continuing a tradition: Christmas dinner is (really nice) fresh veggie sushi.

Back at home, Christmas continues! A gift basket arrived for Dad, from Plan Toys.

Arlo had a picnic and ate the cashews like a pro.

We had to take photos of everyone who might pick up Arlo from school, to send to the school. Arlo's photo turned out surprisingly well!

Tuesday morning at the playground with P'Noi, while Mum and Dad run errands.

"This slide is slow!" proclaimed Arlo.

Not sure how to play on the jungle gym dome.

Getting some assistance, but deciding that climbing is not (yet) his cup of tea.

Mum had lunch with colleagues (some former) whom she hadn't seen in a long time.

And one of those former colleagues gave Arlo a lovely Christmas present.

Again, holding it up for the camera: a nice, soft Jim Thompson t-shirt. The poshest article of clothing that Arlo owns now.

What's this? Christmas continues!

On Wednesday morning, checking out the nice tin of Danish butter cookies that one of the neighbors brought Arlo. Oh boy, too many to choose.

Then Arlo's friend P'Kate came for a New Year's visit. They are pretty good at playing together.

P'Kate figured out the ringtoss game pretty quickly.

P'Kate was directing Arlo: Stop! Go!

And there was lots of running around!

Watching as Dad gets lunch ready.

And with all that pizza energy, it's bubble time!

Kate had a definite advantage: in part because she's slightly taller, but also much better-coordinated!

But Arlo had the upper hand here: in finding Wally.

Bangkok Week 704

December 23, 2021

It’s the first week of the Holiday Break! And boy, was it packed: Arlo had 2 swimming lessons, went to a Christmas fair, got to dive his very own Mini, visited an ice rink, went to the park, had P’It and P’At over for a play date, had a play date at Sally’s house, and then spent 3 days at a resort in Trat with his Yaa! Happy Holidays!

We arrived at swimming a little early this week.

Waiting patiently for our class to start.

Surprising himself with his kicks. Arlo was the only student for the first half of class.

His power kicks continued on the motor boat.

And practicing his underwater swimming.

Arlo can climb out of the pool all by himself now!

Marching across the iceberg with confidence.

Arlo completed Baby Swimming 2, and has a certificate to show for it!

That night, wishing his Aa Top a happy birthday!

Another day, another (make-up) swimming lesson!

December 16, 2021

An exceptionally busy week for Arlo: two swimming lessons, a birthday party, brunch with Uncle Simon, a trip to the farm, and two visits to his new school! Oh, and his Puu even came up from Trat to say hello!

Arlo's very happy to be talking to Granny and Grandpa on this holiday Friday morning.

And then it's off to swimming! Here is Arlo!

Christmas has arrived in Bangkok! Enjoy the holiday season!

It's a busy Friday: Arlo is learning how to use the lock on his favorite suitcase.

Ho ho ho! We have a serious Saturday morning project here! And Arlo can help, this time.

Bangkok Week 701

December 2, 2021

We spent the Thanksgiving weekend at the Rayong Marriott Resort & Spa. It was a lovely 3+ days away, and had activities aplenty to keep us busy the whole time.

Here we are! We've arrived in Rayong.

Arlo wastes no time getting comfortable in his new room for the next 3 nights.

This is a nice place to sit!

Bangkok Week 700

Week 700! Another hundredfold milestone! Although this is literally a short week (we’ve moved part of Thursday into Week 701), it was still packed full of activities for our social butterfly: swimming, a visit to P’Kate's new house, and even an attempt at Messy Play!

Very enthusiastic about kicking today!

Bangkok Week 699

What a big week for Arlo! A staycation at the Shangr-La; his first haircut!; and even a visit from his Bu. Wow!

Another Friday, another morning of kicks and splashes.

This is a new activity: using the noodle, unknotted.

And sitting on the giant floating ice berg: get ready to jump off!

Arlo still needs to get comfortable floating on his back.

Who's this alien from another planet!?

Oh, that's just Dad, finally getting a new pair of glasses.

Celebrating Friday night with Mexican food: burritos and a quesadilla from around the corner.

Arlo starts his weekend in style!

And then it's off to the Shangri-La, where we'll spend one night.

Our room: it's ready for us.

And what a welcome gift: can't complain about still having status.

We even have a nice balcony, overlooking the river.

There may not be many tourists, but the dinner cruises are back in action!

They certainly help add color to the night skyline.

And dinner with Arlo's friends at an open-air German restaurant on the khlong.

Well, Arlo didn't socialize much, but he did enjoy the fries.

Arlo hosted his friend Ronan for a play date on Monday.

Lucky Arlo spends a long weekend with his family in Trat! First time since June.

And then it's off to the races!

Uh oh! We're a little wild in the noodle today.

But at least we're having fun!

Pretty sure the exercise is: Mum pours water on Arlo's head!

Still have to work on our back float.

Saturday morning road trip!

Everyone in? We're off to Trat!

Bangkok Week 697

We enjoy a lovely long weekend at the I-Love-Phants lodge, part of the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand. Highly recommended!

It's Friday. You know what that means! Time to kick kick kick!

Practicing floating and balancing on his own, with the noodle.

And diving into the water off the board.

And jumping into the water with abandon.

Saturday, we set off for a long-weekend in Petchburi. Here's our lunch stop: at a pomelo farm.

Arlo enjoyed pointing at all the pomelos. Practically a spitting image of our pomelo plantation at home.

Lunch in the hut wasn't half-bad, either.

And here we are at I-Love-Phants lodge...

They have almost 70 Ha of area, home to 25 rescued elephants and over 700 animals in all.

Our room is definitely in the middle of the jungle, but hopefully some visitors will pass by! Arlo is waiting...

Well this was a new site: giant jungle ants, carrying away entire pieces of kibble.

And off they all go, to feed the family. It'll be a feast tonight!

It is also not a myth that elephants like to throw dirt onto their backs. This one might start growing trees soon.

The wall was a perfect height for Arlo.

After a short chat, they decide to come back over to see if anything new is happening.

... except for this gal, who stayed behind to scratch her bum on a tree.

They've got a whole lot of rescued gibbons staying with them: these are some of the newer arrivals.

This one is the youngest, and still waiting to be introduced to older gibbons.

And here's Jan, a rescued puma, enjoying her shade and keeping a close eye on the visitors.

And this is Canoe, a rescued Chimp who lived in a tiny cage outside a school for almost 30 years. He only drinks filtered water.

Meanwhile, back on the bus, Arlo is quite keen to stay right here thank you.

Here's Mami, a Siamang gibbon, who doesn't like to spend time in the trees.

He's the loudest species of gibbon; we could hear him in the morning from our room.

A few more gibbons just hanging out in the trees (where they're meant to be).

And here's a Cassowary: considered the deadliest bird because of it's sharp and strong claw. (It can rip open a human abdomen in one strike...)

He must have had about 50 grapes though...

And we were in for an afternoon treat, back at our balcony.

They crush and pop the banana trees (not the fruit, the entire tree trunk) like they're cookies.

Bangkok Week 696

A long weekend filled with lots of exciting new activities: train rides, bike rides, car rides.

It's Friday. So you know what that means!

Time to kick our legs!

Arlo also practiced swimming the length of the pool floating on his own in a noodle.

Everyone: time to pour water on your children!

Arlo's favorite part of the class: jumping time!

Time to ride a train! Arlo hasn't ridden the BTS in a very, very long time!

Woah! And just like that, here's the train.

We're on our way to Kheha, the last stop on the Sukhumvit line.

The end of the train is the best place to stand: not only is it the emptiest, but there are no ads plastered over the windows, blocking the view.

Arlo was looking for cement mixers down below the whole time.

The park used to be the golf course of the State Railway of Thailand, so it's a nice, big, green space.

They have massively improved the bike path since we were last there (12 years ago?)

The 3km bike path goes along a canal for a while.

Stopping at the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium. Arlo liked the waterfall.

And we saw lots of bees...

... but there seemed to be more butterflies outside the butterfly garden than inside it!

Back on our bikes, which pleased Arlo.

Nice and shady most of the route.

Arlo finally goes back to the fountains to play; and has a very artistic painting session, the first in a while.

Arlo fires up his bike with enthusiasm, to celebrate Friday.

So much swimming for Arlo this week. Plus, he goes bike riding for the very first time. Exciting!

We start this week with a giant shipment from Trat.

Yay! Arlo’s swimming class finally resumes. But Boo Hoo! It’s also Granny’s last 5 days with us!
