They had 4 or 5 different kinds of thali sets from all over India.

Shocked. You order at the counter and take a number card to your table.

Alias: Jakarta Week 5

Marouy is bright and chipper on Saturday morning.

Who are you again, and what are you doing on my bench?

The wind chime from Canada-- even Marouy is interested.

Final resting place -- near the house, where it won't be stolen.

The jackfruit tree in the back yard is on some serious steroids.

The new Pretty-in-Pink house.

Suits the tropical countryside, no?

So much for being bright and awake. Heavy eyelids and an even heavier chin.

And down he goes.

Mr. Melodramatic knows he's about to be left home alone for a few hours.

An intricate dragon at the Chinese New Year festivities in town.

Before making merit, you have to assemble a complicated kit of paper, thread, a needle... and of course money.

At the entrance: the gold tree.

An all-natural serpent inside the central pavilion.

Three colorful Buddha images, all in a row. The strings are special for this merit-making event (I think).

Everyone's gathered around a ball, suspended over a hole. You press a leaf of gold foil onto the ball, then drop a needle-thread-paper jumble into the hole below.

Am I getting this right?

The pavilion has rather elaborate chandeliers!

Outside, surrounding the pavilion are another 8 suspended balls, where you repeat the same ritual: press the gold, sprinkle some coins, wai.

I have to say, my gold-pressing skills had improved by the end of this exercise.

Which ball is this? I've lost count.

We found Russell from UP (Disney-Pixar) at the temple that afternoon, too.

Anybody inside this giant gold ball?

Sign it, before it gets buried.

360 degrees of home-made cooking. What did we do to merit this?

Bangkok Week 136

February 3, 2011

Alias: Jakarta Week 4, plus a side trip to Khao Yai National Park for BCG Bangkok's annual New Year trip.

Annual New Year's trip -- this time to Khao Yai National Park about 2 hours outside Bangkok. It's known for its mountains and wineries.

First stop after lunch: an "adventure park" owned by the family of a colleague.

The activites clearly derive from bizarre Japanese gameshows. Game #1: Human-vegetable-bowling.

You get the idea? Note: feet are strapped together.

Assistants were required to help right the fallen veggie pins.

Game #2: Solve a math equation, and then slap the correct number tile with your giant hand.

Hilarity ensures -- and often no clear winner determined.

Needless to say, I was on the pink team.

Game #3: Catch the giant pinball as it drops over the edge.

Way harder than it looks!

This local dog was getting more attention than the team-building games.

Game #4: Push your teammate into the target zone...

... but not too far, lest they end up in the water!

Entertainment for all... except those being pushed down the plank.

Too tired to play. Let's all just relax together.

Yay pink team, the losers of the day!

The annual "Newbies' Performance" was MC'd by a strawberry and pineapple, naturally.

Does this quality as office attire?

Finally able to see the resort in all its glory the next morning.

Even in the morning, the mountainous weather was still surprisingly cool!

On the way back to Bangkok, a pit-stop at a mock Italian countryside village. Surprisingly detailed.

All he wanted for his 3Nth was a neck tie... so why not a Batik one?

Birthday dinner at Indus, an classy Indian joint in a classy part of town.

Well, who knows how classy it really was... it was so dimly lit, we couldn't see.

No shortage of goodies.

My reward for speding Chinese New Year at the Mandarin: 3 bananas and a mystery puck. Joy.

Jakarta traffic the night before CNY was significantly worse than usual. Fathomable? (We waited 1.5 hours for a taxi.)

But on CNY morning, no cars in sight. Also a Jakarta first.

Local communities are reminiscent of Bangkok.

All restaurants of this genre seem to display their food on stacked plates in the window.

Okay, Jakarta canals may have one up on Bangkok. You can smell them from blocks away.

Many malls are like MBK: individual stalls and sellers throughout.

Eye-crossing displays at a local Hypermart.

Self-serve frozen fries and dogs. Mmm.

Hehehe, aren't Jakarta tuk-tuks funny?

Which fruit do you want? It's like a carnival game: reach in, and grab what you can.

Alias: Jakarta Week 3

Having some repairs done to a pair of work shoes at one of Bangkok's many shoe factories.

An ornate bungalow at Santichai Prakan Public Park, on the river.

Dedicated locals enjoy their evening aerobics class on a nice backdrop.

Phra Sumen Fort, constructed in 1783 to fortify the old city during the reign of King Rama I.

Said Old City!

Our fist desination: dinner at a famous "roti" joint called "Roti Mataba".

Famous for its roti breads paired with spicy muslim curries. But this is a salad.

The place was tiny, and packed. This is the second floor of the store's tiny shophouse.

Finally, some famous roti, too. In Jakarta, "roti" is the generic word for "bread".

Two equally sleepy locals.

As we approached the hot backpacker's haven, we passed many used bookstores. This guy finds a cheap John Grisham.

This place was absolutely hopping at night. We found where all of Bangkok's tourists live!

Every foreigner was packed onto one of 3 main streets. This one: the infamous Khao San.

We found takers! Timid but tempted tourists wearily select their fare.

This guy has magnificient resolve, and a wonderful ability to filter out all chaos around him.

Just one block away, ghost town! Everyone back in the "real world" has gone to bed.

Alias: Jakarta Week 2

One oddity of the Mandarin - they love to give 3 identical fruit daily. Apparently they've not learned the concept "variety".

Say what? Jakarta traffic?

Looks just like a Thai table!

Indo vegetarian: a peanut sauce salad and deep-fried tempeh patty. Everything is very sweet...

I've had at least one of these daily now.

Inside Grand Indonesia Shopping Town are some positively bizarre areas -- including a mock-up of Rockefeller Center.

Now I think we're in Western Europe somewhere.

And heading back to the hotel the long route -- around our Welcome Monument.

And in front of the picturesque Hyatt. There are 5-star hotels at every quadrant of the roundabout.

Bangkok Week 133

January 13, 2011

Welcome to Jakarta, the new host to Bangkoks 133-153.

The 33-lb foam, in its final resting place! (We did eventually remove the 2 comforters from underneath.)

And a new decoration further separates the bathroom from the rest of the apartment.

Skytrain window decorations illuminate the arm.

First less-than-exciting view of Jakarta, out the 6th-floor hotel window.

In the morning, a perfect view of the office (in one of the 2 towers straight ahead).

Seems close enough -- why not go by foot? Light traffic, for some reason.

Footbridges differ from Bangkok's in 2 key ways: 1) they're louder (the floors are loosely-anchored sheets of steel) and 2) they use only ramps, no stairs.

Rush hour mustn't be in full swing yet! (The buses, on average, trump Bangkok's on old age.)

Final destination: BCG Jakarta (not Poland).

The building lobby looks like a 5-star hotel.

Christmas 2010 - Week 2

January 7, 2011

In the second week of Christmas, Toronto gave to me... a rainbow and Korean kimchi.

The extremely classy holiday decoration we brought from afar. Goes well with the granite.

Ta-daa. Her fancy new Maxwell House coffee-making coffee maker.

(Re)found the elaborately-decorated house on Clinton that we first spotted over a decade ago.

Looking through the past week's photos... and boy, are there many.

At long last! North American Chinese food! And it's even vegetarian.

A sad reunion and final farewell with the tacky trophies of my high school years. (Amazingly, all the weapons were still attached to the men!)

Another stylish knick-knack from my room on Jefferson.

Afternoon tea with another set of familiar faces.

And a reunion over Tim Horton's -- how appropriate.

Back on Bloor, dinner's taking place at the famous neighborhood all-you-can-eat Sushi parlor.

The late-comers are relegated to the end.

It's darn-well about time! Can't believe we went 10 days without a dozen Tims.

Monday morning trip to the Royal Ontario Museum. Time to take out another membership.

This museum, too, has recently undergone a modern renovation/ expansion ... this one by Daniel Libeskind.

We get to cook Thai. We get to cook Thai! Such a rare opportunity comes but once a year.

They just love to mesh old and new in this city.

The food was so steamy, it turned mum's hair grey.

The restaurant draws crowds at all hours of the day. This is 3pm on a Tuesday afternoon.

Impulse trip to Niagra Falls!

AHHH!!! I'm getting excited!

Our cute office Christmas tree. Nicely decorated, but sufficiently professional.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have the decorations put up by our building management.

This is marvelously tacky, gotta give them that much!

They even managed to find the creepiest Santa in Bangkok.

But there's room for Christmas, any where you look.

Special Friday night dinner out at an authentic Southern Indian place.

All-veggie menu meant lots of things to try.

Too much for two? Never!

In Bangkok, Santa comes by skytrain.

Pink ice dessert - still #1, even on a cool winter's day.

Even better than a candy cane!

Couldn't round up my siblings and Santa for a photo, so these guys had to stand in.

On Saturday night, privileged to land tickets to VIVA! Thailand's "first and only pop-opera band".

Okay, apparently we got there a bit early -- even though it was 5 minutes till showtime.

The group comprises 3 guys and 2 women, all of whom still look young. This was their opening night.

They sang pop versions of classic opera songs, plus an assortment of classic rock (e.g. Queen) and Thai pop. Fun!

On Saturday night, the walkway outside MBK was hopping with illegal vendors.

MBK's suitably tacky Christmas and New Year decorations.

Note: A gang of Santas making their escape up the side of the mall, to their getaway helicopter on the roof... cause that's normal!

Christmas is in the humid Bangkok air!

Like the rest of Bangkok, our gym has overzealously decorated itself for the holidays.

This year, Siam Discovery's tree is made of recycled sheet metal. (In past years, it's been old CDs.)

"Christmas Trees" spread the spirit throughout the city.

Winter in Bangkok is also synonymous with Beer Gradens. Here, lots of empty beer towers waiting for their evening go-round.

There was another arts and crafts fair. These owl keychains were awfully cute-- but bulky.

Can you tell what these Christmas trees are made out of?

Artists working live at their stall. Painting from cell phones is a convenient way to let your portrait model keep shopping.

Dad's already preparing his new retirement business in Bangkok.

At Bumrungrad Hospital, the Healthy Living Club is right next to -- that's right -- McDonalds!

The dishes are served on a soft, sour bread that you tear up and eat with your meal.

A long-weekend with the Fantastic Four: Marouy, Khun Alvin, Khun Simon and Khun Theodore.

They say Father's Day weekend is the busiest travel weekend of the year.

Finally seeing the much-hyped squirrels (actually chipmunks!) in person.

There were originally 3 guys, but one had escaped from the cage a few days earlier.

Mr. Sad Face keeps an eye on his chippy friends to pass the time.

Chipmunk #3 (the jailbreaker) hasn't strayed far from the cage. Look up!

A giant bunch of bananas, recently harvested from one of the banana trees behind the house. Lots of squirrel food there!

These days, it's held at Shrewsbury International School, on the riverside. Needless to say, they have a beautiful property.

Haven't had cotton candy in how many years?

There were many handmade Thai Christmas decorations... mostly sold by various charities and foundations.

No British event is complete without men in kilts... a good excuse to stay cool and aerated in the Bangkok heat...

The various games, rides and activities for kids were sponsored by schools or companies.

This was the coolest attraction by far! Water balls!

The Marshall-Jefferson fair never had a merry-go-round!

But if I remember correctly, some years it did have a small back-of-the-truck "ferris wheel".

Santa was there! I wonder if the Thai kids knew who he was.

We'd never seen so many foreigners in one place in Thailand. Wow. Serious culture shock.

They even had a dunk tank! (Is the girl on the plank praying?)

Another November full moon, another Loy Krathong!

Excited as a 5-year-old to finally spot one of the new 4-car trains being test-run on Saturday morning!

We found krathongs made of bread at a department store, and decided to buy one for the big night.

Dinner with James, fellow MIT MechE alum, and a colleague who were in town for the Loy Krathong festivities.

Someone's soba spaghetti was sprouting something suspicious.

My "soy milk suki" was... interesting!

Our friend dutifully watched over the Loy Krathong festivities at Lumphini all full-moon-night-long.

Here's our bread krathong. All-natural (except perhaps the color), for our lizard friends' breakfasts.

First stop: snack for us.

There was a huge festival setup, showcasing various Thai traditions.

Lots of people set out to float their krathongs at the first open space they came across. We decided to keep walking instead.

Here's an ornate one.

Again, they suffer the fate of stagnant pond water.

For whatever reason, there was a small old car show.

Suddenly, I'm the legendary monster that guards Wat Arun.

The guy on the left is made simply from a lotus flower.

More water access, more stranded krathongs. We didn't see anyone fall in, though.

This modern one is made by SCG paper -- to promote use of its recycled cardboard, I hope!

There was a series of elaborate Krathong in a competition -- each one entered by a big Thai company.

Doesn't it make you wonder if they could really float if tested?

This dragon head is made entirely of leaves! Kinda neat, kinda creepy.

Lots of flowers went into the decoration of this one.

I wonder how long it takes to assemble one as complex as this. The flowers still look fresh.

Uh oh! I see someone at work on a Sunday night!! (Or maybe someone just left a light on.)

A group of foreign kids came dressed in their best Thai Traditional wear. Cute!

Here we go, ready to float ours off a small dock that overhangs the water.

And an unceremonious send-off. I hope some fish got to taste it before the city scooped it out the next morning.

Lots of people, but it didn't feel too crowded!

It actually looks pretty when they make their way toward the center of the pond.

A packed weekend, with some surprise guests...

Off to another wedding in our classy private limo.

Actually, we did get to take a private boat though.

The Mandarin Oriental's little shuttle boat is equally as lush as the hotel itself.

From the outside, the Mandarin is nothing overly impressive.

But inside, it's the embodiment of opulence and luxury! Lives up to its reputation.

The cake-cutting that happens every time... except this time, it was a REAL CAKE!!!

Our first visitors in a long time! Too bad we only got to see them for 90 minutes at 7am on a Sunday.

A fun weekend, with few photos to show for it.

A bit of free time to create some baked goods. A nice familiar feeling.

We bought some donuts from Mister Donut ... who shows considerably less care when chucking his donuts into a box.

At least they were tasty, if not a bit mangled.

MBK's coupons are all decked out for the holidays... are you?

The number one dessert, yes, but its price here detracts a bit from the refreshing goodness.

There was a neat little "SME" arts and crafts fair outside MBK... complete with entertainers...

... and inflatable Santa decorations.

Bangkok Week 123

BCG's annual Southeast Asia get-together was held in Phuket this year, at a lovely new resort. The weather held out... but the H1N1 did not.

An especially low-hanging cloud stands out as we descend into Phuket International Airport (HKT).

I would love to stand on this beach to get shots of planes approaching the runway!

We were a huge group -- over 200 in all -- and we stayed at a newly-opened resort on the northern end of the island.

The resort, like most beach-front resorts, was long and skinny -- to fit within the sliver-shaped plot of land.

I shared a room with a colleague from Singapore. Unfortunately, they'd run out of 2-bed rooms! So one of us slept in the bathtub.

This whole window-into-the-bathroom style is quite popular these days. Dunno if I like it...

I don't know what these wax-like flowers are... but I haven't seen them in Bangkok.

Rows of rooms... the resort opened officially on October 1st.

Near the beach, they have an "infinity pool" and plenty of loungers.

In this sun, these chairs look more like baking sheets though.

It was really odd: the beach was lined with pine trees.

We were at Mai Khao (White Wood) Beach on the north-western tip of the island... one of the least-developed beaches.

Beautiful water, but too hot to stay outside for long!

There were lovely areas of grass in front of the beach... perfect for tossing the frisbee! Did I mention the pine trees?

The resort also had beach front villas ... with an appropriately chubby price tag.

The sky is as blue as the ocean (and the infinity pool). But too hot to swim during the peak of the day.

The resort was landscaped with a mix of sand, steams and ponds.

They had a pricey cafe that I only walked past.

The comfortable open-air lobby, in which I spent much time using the free wifi.

As the sun set, the more athletic of the group played a game of beach football -- made particularly challenging by the steep slope of the sand.

Most of us were just spectators.

Colleagues from Jakarta, Singapore and Bangkok.

Lovely sunset. Time to head back in for dinner.

Lots of little shells mixed in with the sand. And maybe that's the white wood after which the beach is named.

The 3 other vegetarians and I got exiled to the corner of this restaurant... with little more to eat than plain noodles and chili sauce.

A short time in Bangkok, and 3 days in Singapore -- both work and intense sight-seeing in the evenings.

Welcome to Singapore. Here's a view from my hotel window, looking south-west-ish across the bay to the financial district.

My office is visible in that cluster in the background -- so it's close enough to walk, right?

The first morning was a bit rainy. Everyone who walks uses the underground mall / walkways. No one walks above-ground!

The newly-constructed Marina Bay Sands resort and casino -- billed as the world's most expensive stand-alone casino property.

Construction was going on into the night. They're not kidding when they talk about the fast pace of development in this city.

The former supreme court building, which is now being converted into a museum to house Singapore's national art collection.

Another historic building was home to the Parliament from 1965 to 1999, and is now a multi-disciplinary arts venue.

The juxtaposition of western architecture in a tropical landscape was unusual.

The city actively works to conserve the old shop houses, as they are the one bit of "historical" architecture left in Singapore.

You can see how the CBD is wedged into a small slice of land that juts into the water.

I don't know what this building is, but it was very appealing to the eye.

They are now all home to restaurants and pubs (that I imagine are very touristy)... but they were all foreign cuisine -- Thai, Indian, Irish. I guess there isn't much "local" cuisine.

Back at the CBD, there's a nice sitting area at the riverside, for all the businesspeople who care for some fresh air during lunch.

There are a ridiculous number of ships that dock permanently just offshore. Singapore is one of the 5 busiest ports in the world.

On this unusually clear day, land on the other side of the Singapore Strait was visible -- a first for many people in the office! (It's Indonesia.)

Bangkok needs these on its doors for the commuting-challenged.

Welcome to Little India -- an extremely ethnic neighborhood in the middle of downtown Singapore.

Deepavali -- or Diwali -- the festival of lights is coming up. There's quite a festive atmosphere throughout Little India.

The street was decked out for Diwali like Western cities would get set for Christmas.

The shophouses along the main road were all 2-stories, unlike the 3- and 4-story shophouses further downtown.

All the gold shops that are run by the Chinese in Bangkok belong to the Indians in Singapore!

A famous Indian temple that is listed on all tourists' itineraries.

The architecture is very similar to the Indian temples in Bangkok. I've just never been in one before.

It's an interesting contrast to all the Thai temples I'm used to. Less gold, more colors, and different images.

A very local place. I was soon accompanied by 3 Indian ladies who sat directly opposite me, and watched in silence as I dined.

We don't have these funny little purple eggplants in Thailand! They're like a cross between western and asian ones.

It's different -- milder -- than Thai food, but the concept is the same.

Mr Merlion's visitors continue to flock to his side! I'll see him next trip. Bye-bye, Singapore.

Bangkok Week 121

In celebration of the end of the vegetarian festival, we spend the whole week eating.

Mystery snacks from China. I think it's sesame-seaweed cookies. No English anywhere, but they looked good.

Last day of the vegetarian festival. Going out with a bang at another Japanese restaurant.

Unlike the last one, this is a pretty ubiquitous trying-to-be-classy chain.

Last night of J-week! Boooo.

The next day at MBK, our normal vegetarian people had gone on holiday!! Must've been a crazy week. So, we were left scrambling for veggie food.

Shanghai 4 days

A whirlwind 4-day trip to the impressive city of Shanghai. No time for tourism, and too much to see! But really pleasantly surprised by what little I did see. Will be going back for sure.

My compact, but nice, hotel room with a stunning view and perfect location.

A small detail adds a cute touch in the bathroom.

No one spoke English at this dinner joint, but I managed to score a vegetarian hot pot anyway.

Nanjing Road Walking Street is hopping from dawn till 11pm, after the shops have closed.

It's wide, clean, and closed to wheeled trafic. Like Times Square on steroids.

Lots of European-inspired architecture. Not sure how much is authentic, and how much is replicas.

Lots of upscale foreign brands mixed in with local Chinese brands.

More beautiful buildings. The lighting made everything look great at night.

One of the police men / security guards left his vehicle unattended.

Most of the buses run on cables, which must do wonders to reduce the pollution.

This is the only store that looked even remotely like a stereotypical "Chinatown" joint.

Lots of beautiful, old Western-influenced buildings line the Huangpu River in the Bund area of the city.

Huge numbers of people come to the riverside -- almost all are Chinese tourists.

Even the edge of the viewing area is detailed to look nice from the other side, especially for the river cruises.

The square was actually a large public park. I was very impressed by the size, tidiness, and diversity of plants.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai is in the middle of the park.

There was a piece made of lawn chairs outside the museum.

This giant bamboo sculpture was neat to look at, but I have no idea what it was.

There was a super-stylin' Granny playing badminton with the museum wall for the whole time I was there.

They also had an amusement park in there, complete with little dragon roller coaster.

This was advertised as the exercise area of the park.

But all the locals seemed to be there to sit and chat (on a really high bench -- note how their legs all dangle).

Green in the city -- it's nice that they've kept some!

Are they making fun of fat westerners?
